Born in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Loretta (Forte) Manie. She was a 1938 graduate of Woburn High School and was introduced to her husband Roger, who was then in the Merchant Marines, by his sister. They married and settled in Woburn, first on Highland Street and later in East Woburn, where they remained.

In earlier years, Gilda and her husband enjoyed traveling, particularly taking road trips throughout the southern states to visit family and friends. Her pastimes included crocheting, knitting, and needlepoint, and over the years she designed many beautiful pictures and rugs. Her focus in life was her family, particularly her husband Roger, to whom she was devoted throughout their sixty years together.
Preceding her in death were four brothers: John, Genaro "Gin", Edward and Anthony Manie, and two sisters, Olympia Manna and Adeline Martin.
