OBITUARY:

Marie A. Barry, 84, went to her resting place Sunday evening, January 31st, surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late John M. Barry, Sr., who died ten years ago.

Born in Sluice Point, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Sylvie (Brown) Babin. Her parents died at an early age and she was adopted by the Eakins family and subsequently the Surette family. She maintained relationships with her wide extended family throughout her life.

She and her husband John had been married for nearly fifty-two years at the time of his death on February 12, 2000, and he always referred to her as "my sweet Marie," an endearment acquired when she was a young girl in elementary school by Sr. Angela, one of her teachers. They lived on Elijah Street for more than forty years, where her husband took great pleasure in lighting up the street every holiday season with his impressive display of Christmas ornaments and lights. Marie was known as the "neighborhood mom" on Elijah Street. Her greatest joy was in devoting her life to her nine children, as well as spending special time with her grandchildren.

She and her late husband loved traveling throughout New England as well as the Caribbean. In her leisure time Marie enjoyed dancing and working with ceramics.

Preceding her in death, along with her husband John, were her son, Kevin, who died in 1976, her adoptive mother, Celina Surette, her brother, Walter Surette, and her siblings from Nova Scotia: Leo, Lawrence, George, Gertrude, Hilda and Julia.

Surviving are eight children: Thomas A., Sr. and his wife Diane of Woburn, Mary C. of Sutton, Stephen M. and his wife Jacqueline of Nashua, NH, John M., Jr. and his wife Joanne of Billerica, Paul C. and his wife Sara of Dracut, Michelle A. Murphy and her husband John of Billerica, Kathleen A. Ferrone and her husband John of Woburn, Donna Marie Giannelli and her husband David of Burlington, her siblings: Edward and William Surette, Lillian Brown, Gertrude Doherty, and Fran Corkum, and her Nova Scotia brother, Antoine Babin. She was also the loving grandmother of 22 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, and special aunt of Maureen, Jerry, Diane, Marie, Bobby and the late Michael Ronan. Also surviving are many more loving nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, on Thursday, February 11th at 9:15 a.m., followed by a funeral mass in St. Charles Church, 280 Main Street, Woburn, at 10. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden.

Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Wednesday, February 10th, from 4 to 8 p.m.

Donations may be made in Marie's memory to The Cancer Center, Lowell General Hospital, c/o Development Office, 295 Varnum Avenue, Lowell, MA 01854-2193.
