OBITUARY:
Constance A. (Lunardo) Martello, affectionately known as “Connie” died peacefully on Wednesday, February 3rd, at the age of 89. Her final days were spent at home surrounded by family and friends whom Connie had touched in some special way.
Born in Woburn, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Josephine (Gentile) Lunardo. Raised in the South End of Woburn, her family was very active in the Italian community there as her father was one of the founding members of the South End Italian Club.
Connie attended the Woburn Public Schools, graduating with the Class of 1938. During her tenure at Woburn High School she participated in the Student Work Program, which was instituted by President Roosevelt in the mid thirties. The program provided needed jobs for students in high school. Connie qualified for the program and her responsibilities were to complete administrative duties for her History teacher. She also managed to work in the Dietary Department at the Choate Memorial Hospital following her school day. All the while, she maintained High Honor Roll throughout her high school career.
After graduating, she began working at the shoe factory in Stoneham, and later enjoyed employment at Raytheon Corp. in Waltham. In 1944 she was introduced to this fine young man from Vermont, named “Tony “ Martello. to whom she married in 1946. They spent the next fifty five years together. In 1946 after their marriage, they made their home in the South End of Woburn and later moved to the West Side, where they remained their entire married life. Together they opened “Kay’s Spa” which was a local grocery store on Tremont Street in the South End of Boston. Working in Boston, provided fertile ground from which a passion of Connie’s grew, the love of all the Boston sports, especially the Red Sox. From those days on she was an unwavering fan. Having begun her family she wanted to work closer to home, and began working at The Rode Co., Inc, located off Green Street. The Rode Co. would become her workplace for over twenty years. She completed her nearly 62 years of work life with the Bellofram Corporation and Medical Parameters.
Throughout her lifetime, Connie was very dedicated to her family. She took great pride in her daughters and all of their wonderful accomplishments, throughout high school, college and their professional careers. When her dear grandchildren came into the world, they would bestow her the affectionate name of “Mammy.” Her love and devotion to her grandchildren was next to none other. In later years she and her husband would often frequent the skies and travel the US and Caribbean.
Besides her love of family, friends and sports, she was an active member of Saint Barbara’s Woman’s Sodality, the Young at Hearts Club, and the South End Italian Club.
In addition to her parents, Connie was predeceased by her husband “Tony” who passed away in 2001, her loving siblings Rose Brennan, Frank, Anthony and Joseph Lunardo, Angelina Ciccarello and Anna Tucker.
