OBITUARY:
Dorothy A. Brown, a native of Woburn who was affiliated for many years as a nurse at the Chelsea Soldier's Home, passed away Thursday morning, July 1st, at the Woburn Nursing Center. She was the daughter of the late William and Catherine (McGreal) Brown.
Born in Woburn eighty-seven years ago, Dorothy graduated from St. Charles High School and earned a nursing degree from the Tewksbury Hospital School of Nursing. For forty-four years she worked at the Chelsea Soldier's Home and resided in the nurse's quarters there. Following her retirement in the mid-eighties she moved to Stoneham and then to the Cape for several years to be close to her family. In more recent years she resided on Campbell Street in Woburn.
In younger years she enjoyed bowling and participated in several leagues. She particularly enjoyed taking trips to Wolfeboro, New Hampshire with her group of friends. Affectionately known as "Brownie," or "Dot," she was an independent woman with a great sense of humor. Generous with her time, she volunteered for years at the Woburn Senior Center, often checking up on other seniors who were confined to their homes. She loved Bingo and getting together with the "Has-Beens," a group of nursing friends with whom she would go out to lunch on a monthly basis to catch up on each other's lives and reminisce.
Preceding her in death were three brothers, John, William, and James Brown, and three sisters, Mary McLaughlin, Josephine Bryant, and Rita McKittrick.
Surviving are her sister, Kathryn E. "Kay" Gavin of Medford, her sister-in-law, Barbara Brown of South Yarmouth, and several loving nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, on Tuesday, July 6th at 9:30 a.m., followed by a funeral mass in St. Charles Church, 280 Main Street, Woburn, at 10. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Woburn.
Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday morning from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., prior to the mass.
Donations may be made in Dot's memory to the Woburn Senior Center, 144 School Street, Woburn, MA 01801.
