OBITUARY:

Esther B. Carroll, a lifelong resident of Woburn, passed away at the Woburn Nursing Center early Wednesday, July 28th, following a lengthy illness. She was the beloved wife of the late William J. "Red" Carroll, Jr., who died seven months ago.

Born in Reading eighty-eight years ago, she was the daughter of the late William and Elizabeth (Quinn) Hickey. She attended Woburn schools and graduated from Woburn High School with the class of 1939. After high school she worked at Stowell's Jewelry in Boston for several years until she left to raise her children.

Esther and her husband were married in 1944 and shared sixty-five wonderful years together. They lived in the South End of Woburn and devoted themselves to their expanding family. Both were active in the Immaculate Conception Parish where they helped to organize the weekly Bingo games for nearly thirty years. Esther was also active in the Sodality at the church. A loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Esther's priority in life was her family.

Preceding her in death, along with her husband, was a sister, Marguerite Nostrum.

Surviving are six children: William J. Carroll III and his wife Deborah of Seabrook Beach, New Hampshire, Kathleen Doto and her husband Joseph of Billerica, Anne Faulkner and her husband John of Woburn, Elizabeth McAvoy and her husband Timothy of Epsom, New Hampshire, Thomas Carroll and his wife Sybille of Medford, and Margaret Orsillo and her husband James of Woburn, and a sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Sullivan of Woburn. She was also the cherished "Nana" of 15 grandchildren: Shawn, Kevin, and Greg Carroll, Jennifer Doto, Melanie Doto-Lausier, and James Doto, Michael Faulkner, Rachel Ciechon, Katherine Corbett, and Timothy McAvoy, Christopher Carroll, and Eric, Scott, David, and Lauren Orsillo, and 7 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, on Saturday, July 31st at 9:15 a.m., followed by a funeral mass in St. Charles Church, 280 Main Street, Woburn, at 10. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Woburn.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 3 to 7 p.m.
