OBITUARY:
Bernice K. Doherty, a lifelong Woburn resident, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, June 27th, at the age of ninety-two. She was the beloved wife of the late William D. Doherty, who died in 1998.
Born and raised in Woburn, Bernice was the daughter of the late Edward and Mary (Quigley) Hart. She was a 1938 graduate of Woburn High School, and continued her education at the Burdett School of Business, where she completed her degree in 1941. She and her husband Bill, a former POW who had been captured during World War II, married in 1949. They started a dry cleaning business in the South End of Woburn, Doherty Cleaners, which operated successfully for many years. Bernice was actively involved, along with her husband, in the bookkeeping aspect of the business. They eventually built their own home on Hilltop Parkway, where they remained to raise their family.
In the early 70's, Mrs. Doherty returned to work at the Registry of Motor Vehicles, and later the Woburn School Department, where she remained until her retirement. She worked at several elementary schools in the city, including the Clapp, Hurld, and White Schools, and eventually retired from the school administration offices in the mid-1980's. She made many lasting friendships during her working years, and after her retirement enjoyed going to lunch with her co-workers as well as her lifelong high school friends.
Bernice's strong Catholic faith and her family were her priorities in life. She enjoyed heading for Seabrook, New Hampshire, every summer, where she the family had many wonderful times together. She golfed occasionally with her husband and was always ready to try something new. A voracious reader, she enjoyed mysteries, historical novels, and biographies, and instilled a love of reading in her children. She will be remembered for her generosity and her great sense of humor.
Preceding her in death, along with her husband Bill, were her infant daughter, Mary, her brother, John Hart, and her sister, Rita (Hart) McHugh.
Surviving are two sons, William Doherty and his wife Patricia of New York and Edward G. Doherty and his wife Sophia of Woburn. She was also the cherished "Grandma" of Erin Doherty of Lowell, William Doherty of New Jersey, Rebecca and Samantha Doherty, both of Woburn, and Stuart Ste. Croix of Virginia.
The funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn on Monday, July 2nd at 9:15 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Barbara's Church, 138 Cambridge Road, Woburn at 10. Interment will take place in Woodbrook Cemetery in Woburn.
Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Sunday from 1 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Donations may be made in Mrs. Doherty's memory to Catholic TV, PO Box 9196, 34 Chestnut Street, Watertown MA 02471 or to St. Barbara's Church, 138 Cambridge Road, Woburn, MA 01801.
